Description

Nitobe Inazo’s Bushido came after the great Meji Restoration of 1867, in the hope of Inazo, and other Japanese intellectuals, that they could better understand and impart the wisdom and knowledge of Japan to all who may want to learn from it. This extensive work was written in a time of great change, when many Japanese believed that the time would come for a new ethical system to be introduced, that would incorporate the values of ancient Japan, while also offering non-samurai Japanese the chance to benefit from the same teachings.

Nitobe’s writing is extremely important, both from a cultural and historical point of view. The Japanese author manages to incorporate the way of life of the samurai in a more compact, yet extensively complete and easier to understand work of literature that continues to this day to remain one of the greatest depiction of Japanese culture and what it stands for.

Bushido is essentially the best presentation of Japanese ethics you will find. The exact translation of the word “bushido” is “the way of the warrior,” originating from the samurai values and morals pertaining to conduct in every aspect of life, loyalty to superiors, and unquestionable honor until death. While the Bushido code was developed as early as the 16th century, developing on values already recognized since the 10th century, it was only in the late 1800s that it became truly well-known through the writings of Nitobe Inazo.

Statesman, skilled scholar and prolific author, Nitobe made one of the greatest contribution to Japanese culture through his work. While the book was received differently in Japan and in the West, it nonetheless drew both admiration and criticism. However, in Japan, it was only in the late 1980s that it became popular once more, while in the western world, it remained a notable best seller since the beginning of the 20th century.
