Description

From cutthroats to fearless fighters or cunning and conniving men known to have pulled the most daring cons in history, pirates have dominated the seven seas for centuries. Fortunately, Captain Charles Johnson, whose true identity is still a mystery to this day, has managed to pen a fine historical collection of biographies, describing the life and achievements of the most famous pirates who ever sailed the world’s oceans.

Originally known as A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates, the book was written in Britain in 1724, and describes contemporary pirates such as Captain Kidd, Anne Bonnet or Edward Teach (also known as Blackbeard) in a detailed, concise manner, for those with a deeper interests in understanding pirates and the concept of piracy in and of itself.

A somewhat unconventional piece of historical documentation, A General History of the Pyrates goes into every single detail about the trends and habits of pirates, as well as the clothes they wore, the drinks they had and the various, unusual details of their lives that one wouldn’t expect to see in most history books. Also, it introduces many of the misadventures of several famous pirates that show how, for instance, Blackbeard was a far less feared and ferocious pirate than many of his contemporaries.

One of the more significant parts of the book deals with the exploits of Anne Bonnet and Mary Reid, two of the few female pirates that are known throughout history. Despite being members of the fair sex, Reid and Bonnet have a fascinating story that Captain Johnson goes into great detail, presenting their lives through accurate historical documentation and word of mouth.
