Understanding the Challenges of Poverty in London’s East End: The People of the Abyss

What would happen in the Western world if there was no aid for the poor, no unions and food stamps, and no scholarships to help promising young students have a better life? Jack London takes us into a world where these lacks were the reality of everyday life, and where people used to struggle just to survive and have enough to eat from day to day.

Also known for famous works like White Fang and The Call of the Wild, Jack London took a somewhat new twist in writing this book, covering the difficult and somewhat depressing topic of poverty in London’s East End. The People of the Abyss is a harrowing, but true story of the life people used to lead in the East End around the turn of the 20th century.

While several other accounts that depicted the life of the working class in England were based mainly on second hand sources, Jack London’s People of the Abyss was a first hand, highly detailed description of just how bad life there could get. The saddest part was that there were about 500,000 people living in those conditions in London alone around 1903, when the book was written, and while the difference between classes was gradually diminished in Britain, it is still a major problem today.

There’s no doubt about the fact that Jack London’s novel can provide an account of poverty that is still in line with what happens in third world countries even now, in the 20th century. The author, however, took his work seriously, and actually lived in places like the Whitechapel District, and slept on the street, in order to get a real account of what people living in those conditions were truly going though.

A really mind blowing and eye-opening story, The People of the Abyss is a must read, and has often been considered one of the most heartbreaking literary works of the dawn of the 20th century.
