Description

Francis Key Howard relates in this account his life as a political captive of America. He indicates that he was imprisoned at the same place where his grandfather was devoted to composing the national anthem of the “land of the free,” which has an incredibly impressive disparity. The afflictions that were inflicted upon him by the Union forces had the consequences of setting his willpower to withstand partial governmental decrees.

Frank Key Howard also known as Francis Key Howard was the grandson of Francis Scott Key and Revolutionary War colonel John Eager Howard. Frank was the editor of the Daily Exchange, a Baltimore periodical considerate to the Southern source. He was detained without a warrant at his residence by U.S. Major General Nathaniel Prentice Banks on the direct instructions of General George B. McClellan implementing the strategy of President Abraham Lincoln.

In his narrative, he wrote that he was informed by the arresting officer that the command had come from Secretary of State William Seward. The grounds for his arrest was for jotting an analytical editorial in his periodical of Abraham Lincoln’s suspension of the writ of habeas corpus, and derogatory on the matter that the Lincoln administration had proclaimed martial law in Baltimore and restrained without charge George William Brown, the mayor of Baltimore, sitting U.S. Congressman Henry May, all the police commissioners of Baltimore, and the entire city council. Lincoln’s suspension of habeas corpus in Maryland had just been confirmed unlawful by U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Taney, his great-uncle by marriage, in Ex parte Merryman, but Lincoln had disregarded the federal court decision.

Frank was first imprisoned at Fort McHenry, the same fort his grandfather Francis Scott Key saw endured a British attack in the War of 1812, which motivated him to make The Star Spangled Banner, which became the national anthem of the United States of America.
