Robert Burton was an English scholar at Oxford University, famous for his work, The Anatomy of Melancholy. He was also the imperative incumbent of St. Thomas the Martyr, Oxford, and Seagrave in Leicestershire.

The medical textbook focuses more one’s self. Burton believes that information about psychology is a man’s special need. He should be knowledgeable about psychology. Burton’s expansive volumes are critiqued as delightful. It describes in encyclopedic, the ubiquitous Jacobean malady, melancholy is caused by an excess of black bile, in accordance to the humor theory.

Burton is in his quest to fight his long-term depression, he helped and wrote to himself this massive book. Also with the aim of helping other patients who suffered from this condition.

The work was published under the well-known name Democritus Junior. His book rendered his readers amusement and additional knowledge which became one of their selections.
