James Allen was probably the closest anyone could get to New Age thinking at the beginning of the 20th century. As a Man Thinketh – a literary essay which is considered to be his finest work – basically sends a clear and distinct message to the reader about the true nature of the identity of any person: that of his/her own mind.

A popular idea among New Age enthusiasts and self-help gurus is that we create our own reality through our thoughts. The Bible passage that inspired Allen to write his essay spoke of a similar concept: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so he is” (Book of Proverbs, Chapter 23, Verse 7).

As a Man Thinketh takes this statement and discusses its deepest implications and impact on human life in the most direct and simple fashion. In accordance with Allen’s presented ideology, people literally are their thoughts put into actions, and they attract what they are, not what they desire. The author then goes on to explain how each action and emotion is preceded by thought, and how positive, “right” thinking can make an incredible difference in the life of anyone, no matter the circumstances.

Allen’s work, of course, didn’t catch on at the time, since the concept of influencing reality through correct and positive thinking was quite new. However, as time went by and more and more people realized the correlation between this remarkable literary essay, oriental ideals brought forth by disciples of Asian cultures, and the modern New Age concept of law of attraction which is gaining momentum even today, As a Man Thinketh became an inspiration to many modern philosophers, idealists, artists and promoters of the self-help industry.
