Four-Day Planet is one of the author’s best known works. Part of the Terro-Human Future History series, Four-Day Planet mixes the genre of crime stories with science fiction in a masterful way to make an exceptionally entertaining story, even though the novel is not packed with too much action.

Time certainly slows down on the planet that the action takes place on. A day on Fenris lasts 1000 hours, and nights are 1000 hours long as well. The population lives underground – the forbidding climate and the extremely slow revolution of the planet allows them to come out only at sunrise and at sunset, lasting 100 hours each. Piper gives a very vivid description of the extreme conditions that dominate the planet, exploring every detail, from the unbearably high mid-day temperatures to the harsh winds, storms and freezing temperatures at night.

Even though the environment is dramatically different from our world, the conflict depicted is very familiar: it is the clash between corrupt politicians and hunters who chase strange monsters and are looking for a way to make a living. The story line is centered around the investigation element – a young journalist raised on the planet sets out to reveal how corrupt the planet’s government is.

Four-Day Planet is very much a man’s book – there are women mentioned through the story, but they stay in the background and there is no female character in it – , which is probably an attempt to emphasize how cruel life on the planet is. Even so, the book has a distinct appeal for any reader, young or grown-up, men and women, making a very entertaining read for anyone interested in intrigue, high-profile politics, futuristic technological solutions and in what life would be like on such desolate planet. The text is spiced with humorous elements, too – with Piper, it is never as gloomy as it seems.
