The isles of the South Seas are destinations of attraction unusually constrained. The ethnological drawback introduced by the locality is fascinating only to the people of science, industry is insignificant, there is small actual cultivation, and no commerce at all. There is still the attraction of living with individuals whose views in life are ultimately distinct from our own; of living with an austerity far-off to something in a person’s experience, within the environs of magnificence dreamlike both in reality and in memory. It is incredible to inscribe of the islets as one would inscribe of France or Mexico or Japan, the acknowledged point of view of the wanderer is not relevant here.

James Norman Hall was a novelist mostly known for his Mutiny on the Bounty with co-writer Charles Nordhoff. In the First World War, James had the merit of becoming a military of the three Western confederates: Great Britain as an infantryman and later going to France and then the United States.

James was born in Colfax, Iowa, where he studied at the local schools. He completed his studies from Grinnell College in 1910. He composed the song Sons of Old Grinnell, which is a portion of the college songbook. After his studies, he was employed as a social worker in Boston, Massachusetts for the Society for Prevention to Cruelty To Children while thriving to prove himself as a novelist and taking up a master’s degree in Harvard University.
