Description

A romantic tale of love and depicting the moral conflict of having to make a choice between love and wealth, Evelina’s Garden by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman is a great read for adults and teenagers alike.

The character in the title, Evelina, is an old lady living a secluded life in her house that she has not left in forty years. All she seems to care about is her garden – a patch so beautifully tended to that neighbors make small holes in the tall hedge surrounding it, just to be able to take a secret glimpse. The story starts when a young lady appears. She does not only strikingly resemble young Evelina, but has the same name, too and it turns out that she is in fact old Evelina’s niece and she has come to live with her aunt after her father died and she had no money to support herself.

Evelina’s Garden is a love story, so the reader learns about old Evelina’s lost love for a shy, young gentleman more than four decades before and is also allowed to see how love unfolds between young Evelina and a gentleman from the town. History repeats itself and young Evelina almost fails to find the love that she is looking for. Later on in the novel the reader is in for one more major twist: old Evelina dies and leaves her estate to her niece on the condition that she never marries, leaving the young woman to deal with the dilemma alone – which she does, eventually.

Evelina’s Garden is a well-written novel that makes an excellent read for the mature readers just as much as for the young. Freeman’s style is elegant and captivating, the secrets unfold just in the right pace and the resolution of the conflict certainly gives much to contemplate about to modern readers, too.
