Description

The title of this marvelous book by Thomas De Witt Talmage reveals everything about its content: each chapter of the book speaks about one example of the troubles of modern life.

The Abominations of Modern Society was first published in 1872 and it is a collection of essays and lectures about the sins that plague modern life. The problems are addressed by the author in a serious tone, but humor is not missing from the book either. Some of the issues discussed, such as gambling, are specific to men, while others, such as vanity, are typical for women. The other abominations that are described in the book include drunkenness, the failure to provide equal pay for equal work done by men and women, or dishonesty, all of them evils that must be eradicated if one is to live a pure and honest life. It is interesting to note that Talmage encourages young ladies to prepare for a career of their own and he also promotes the employment of women in positions that used to be unavailable to them.

Rev Dr. Thomas De Witt Talmage was a charismatic orator, a prolific writer, as well as a clergyman and a prominent figure of the movement that promoted reforms in the Presbyterian Church across the US, especially in New York. Well-known as a preacher not only in the US, but also in England, Talmage travelled a lot to speak to huge crowds against crime and vice. He dedicated the last years of his life to writing – he worked as an editor and regular contributor to various Christian magazines and papers, such as Christian at Work and Christian Herald in New York, or Advance in Chicago. His sermons, held in front of large crowds (Talmage usually preached to thousands of people at a time), reached an even wider audience after they got published and were read by millions.
