Description

For anyone complaining about money or the harsh living standards of today, Living on Half a Dime a Day is definitely a must read. This is the honest account of Sarah Elizabeth Harper Monmouth about how she managed to survive financial ruin and live modestly with a minimum amount of money per day.

Monmouth was a widow of the Civil war. Living in a small farm in New Hampshire, she one day discovered that all her savings in the form of government funds imploded. Left without money, she starting questioning herself whether she will be able to live with nothing or not. Soon after, she decided to take her fate into her own hands and devise a plan to live with what she had. That is how she managed to live with only 40 dollars per day for a period of three years.

She allocated 17 dollars for food provisions for the entire year. She later wrote that she would cook oatmeal on Monday which would serve as a dessert for the remainder week. She also allocated 13 dollars for fuel, meaning firewood that would keep her warm during the coldest days of winter. She stated that she could now have lived without books, so she spent 10 dollars per year on reading materials.

She saved firewood by putting on mittens and reading until the cold was too much and afterwards she tuck into bed while thinking what she had read about. Later on she started creating works of art from donated book pages and paper only to be able to publish this amazing book a few years after her hardships.

Living on Half a Dime a Day is a truly inspirational story that will have readers think about their blessings and appreciate for what they have in their lives.
