Description

Dr. Branner was a distinguished officer on the geology of South American republics, particularly Brazil, having formed and led the Stanford Expedition to Brazil in 1911, and so on. He subsequently wrote this “little book”, as the writer himself describes it, for the utilization of English-speaking learners who required a quick and factual method of studying Portuguese. Inconsistent to the notion of some before, John C. Branner held that Brazilian Portuguese is not “badly spoken Portuguese”, and, although availing ideals from both Portuguese and Brazilian authors, is likely to provide much dominance to Brazilian Portuguese.

John Casper Branner was a UIS geologist and scholar who explored bauxite in Arkansas in 1887 as State Geologist for the Geological Survey of Arkansas. He was Chair of the Departments of Botany and Geology at Indiana University and after at Stanford University. He was associated with the founding faculty at Stanford and became the university’s second president. He became the President of the Geological Society of America in 1904. He was President of the Seismological Society of America in 1911. He was proficient in Brazilian geology, and all other things.

John was born in the township of New Market, Tennessee, where his father was a business owner. The family later resided on a farm bequeathed his father by his grandfather a mile east of Dandridge on the French Broad River. He was raised there and on a neighboring property to which the family settled in 1859. Throughout the Civil War he was much eager to serve in the Confederate army, and on two instances quit studying for the determination to serve his country. Since he was only 13 years old during that time, he was not able to join the army.

Therefore, he again enrolled at a school for one year at New Market and after such, he attended the Maryville College. Then he traveled to Ithaca, New York, to study at Cornell University.
