Saint Teresa of Ávila, best known as Saint Teresa of Jesus, christened as Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada, was a preeminent Spanish spiritualist, Roman Catholic saint, Carmelite nun and writer in the Counter Reformation, and theologian of thoughtful existence through praying. She was a crusader in the Carmelite Order of her days and the movement she founded, soon associated by Saint John of the Cross, finally brought to the institution of the Discalced Carmelites, however neither she nor John were still existent when the two orders were divided.

40 years after, she was canonized by Pope Gregory XV, and was entitled a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI. Her works, which contain her life chronicle, The Life of Teresa of Jesus, and her pivotal book El Castillo Interior or The Interior Castle, are an essential part of Spanish Renaissance literature also Christian spirituality and Christian reflection rituals. She also drafted Camino de Perfección or The Way of Perfection.

After she died, Saint Teresa was regarded an aspirant to become a national patron saint in Spain. A Santero likeness of the Immaculate Conception of El Viejo, told to have been brought with her brother to Peru, Canonically crowned by Pope John Paul II on 28 December 1989 at the Shrine of El Viejo. Devout Catholic dogmas also unite Saint Teresa with the Infant Jesus of Prague with contentions of previous ownership and piety.
