Description

The Book of Nahum is the seventh book in the Hebrew Bible. Nahum was one of the Twelve Minor Prophets. It was characterized by the prophet Nahum, and possibly written in Jerusalem in the 7th-century BC.

Nahum could have started his prophecies in the regime of Ahaz or to the regime of Hezekiah. As stated, the book might be written in Jerusalem, where he has seen the conquer of Sennacherib and the annihilation of his legion.

The Book of Nahum is referred to as the “book of vision” and was written at the time of the downfall of Nineveh in the regime of Medes and Babylonians. The Nineveh was the capital of the then great Assyrian empire. Nineveh was a huge city and it was the center of culture and industry of the world. But it was a “bloody city full of lies and robbery”, as stated by Nahum.

Nahum’s name is defined as “comforter”, and he came from the town of Alqosh, which is probably identified with the cities, Alqush of Assyria and Capharnaum of northern Galilee. He was a patriotic Hebrew and lived with the Elkoshites.

The writings consist of three chapters. Chapter one speaks about the majesty and might of God’s people in His kindness and asperity. While chapters two and three talks about the downfall of Nineveh. Nineveh was in comparison to Thebes, an Egyptian city that Assyria had destroyed. Nahum partake in the battle. Nineveh is compared with a beast, in pointing out to the beast as an Assyrian symbol of authority.

In the introduction of the book, Nahum described God to be nearly fiery, that God will not ignore the guilty, God will condone His people. God will punish evil but He will save those who trust in Him. God is great in power and He is strong and willful, he will not leave the adversary unpunished.
