Description

The work of Charles and Mary Lamb was written with the declared purpose of bringing the plays of William Shakespeare closer to the heart and mind of two special categories of readers: school children and teenagers.

The stories included in the volume are shortened versions of some of the most popular Shakespearian tragedies and comedies. The plot is simplified and the language is made more accessible, by eliminating the ancient forms of the most commonly met words and replacing them with their modern correspondents. However, the authors succeeded in keeping most of the expressions the writer of the plays used, by harmoniously integrating them in the context.

Mary Lamb chose to adapt the comedies and other plays with a more serene atmosphere and an optimistic, if not totally happy, ending. The Tempest, The Merchant of Venice, The Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Comedy of Errors are some of the Shakespearian works she rewrote, so that the young readers may easily understand them.

On the other hand, her brother, Charles Lamb, had the difficult mission to bring the great tragedies into the school kids’ attention. He succeeded to do that by simplifying the intrigue of Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Tymon of Athens, King Lear or Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.
