Description

First published in 1901, Secret Chambers and Hiding Places by Allan Fea is an interesting account of various secret hiding places across England used by run-away monarchs and persecuted groups looking for shelter. Allan Fea was a well-known historian and antiquary in the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century and his book about the secret chambers under various mansions in the English countryside makes the most of the author’s extensive knowledge about the topic as well as of his enthusiasm.

Fea’s book is far from being just a dry description of the hiding places he visited – it is a fascinating account of the places, spiced up with legends about the holes, caves, caverns and secret passageways as well as with true, documented accounts of how and by whom the places were used. The book’s primary focus is with the hiding places built under or around Catholic homes at the time when Catholics were persecuted for their faith. Some of the places described served the purposes of temporary hiding, while others were suitable for long-term hiding, with special storage spaces for sleeping, study, food and other supplies. Skeletons of people who used the hiding were also found in many of the caves and tunnels.

The book offers only limited technical account of the places described, Fea’s real focus being on the historical context. The reader learns a lot not only about why and how Catholics were prosecuted, but also about major events in the history of Great Britain such as the Gunpowder Plot or the flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Jacobite pretender to the English throne from Scotland. The author pairs the thoroughly documented description of the events with a narrative style that raises the interest of the reader not only towards the sites he talks about, but also towards the era, making an excellent read for anyone interested in history.
