Description

The Jewel of Seven Stars is a magical and exciting adventure novel from the creator of Dracula as we know him today, Bram Stoker. The genre of the book is Imperial Gothic, displaying every characteristic of it: darkness, gloom, occultism, combined with colonialism and a truly 19th century attitude towards exotic and mystic cultures.

Just like Dracula, The Jewel of Seven Stars features lots of supernatural elements. The infamous jewel in the title has been in the grip of a mummy for thousands of years, but now it is gone and Queen Tera is rising from her tomb to get it back. The characters in the story include all sorts of people who can possibly become involved with the mummies and jewels endowed with supernatural powers – archeologists, treasure hunters, grave robbers are all there.

The story dwells on the fascination of Victorians with Egyptology, ancient cultures in general, reincarnation, myth and exotic sceneries, but it is also remarkable due to its historic accuracy – the detailed descriptions of Egyptian artifacts in the book are the results of long and painstaking research conducted by Stoker and the funerary practices and customs described also prove that Stoker was a real expert of the subject matter of the book, Egyptian culture and history.

At first glance, you may think the characters and the story are somewhat stereotypical and the novel certainly comes with a few stereotypes, but Stoker’s style and the way he weaves these stereotypes into the story makes it a very exciting story that will keep you on the edge of your seat for sure. The novel has an exciting feature related to publication history as well: it comes with two different endings, one more gruesome and more powerful, featured in the original version published in 1903 and another one, somewhat milder, found in 1919, seven years after the author’s death.
