Description

J. Sheridan Le Fanu was a recognized author of horror and supernatural fiction who wrote several well-received, as well as a few outstanding novels and short stories. The Evil quest is certainly numbered among them, and remains to this day a Gothic novel that is constantly held in high regard by younger and older readers alike. Some other works from Le Fanu, such as Camilla and Uncle Silas are similar to this novel, and attest to Le Fanu’s remarkable consistency in producing excellent works of Gothic thriller fiction.

Although the story is written using a somewhat slower, more methodical and descriptive writing style – as it was the norm in Le Fanu’s time – it presents a plot that is completely worthwhile, especially once it is fully unfolded, and the action really starts taking you in. It tells the tale of the Marston family, as they go through hard times of financial difficulty. When they receive a letter from a rich cousin that could potentially provide them with a solution to their predicament, things seem to improve. But how wise will it be to accept his proposal when his obnoxious character traits might even spell doom for the entire family?

With detailed, rich descriptions and the ability to set a mood that will keep you on your toes, Le Fanu proves that his ability to turn the simplest happenings into hair-raising, mysterious horror tales is a real gift. The author manages to guide us through what would seem like an overall straightforward plot in the beginning, to surprising outcomes that will simultaneously make you long for the next page, and wish it would disappear just so you don’t have to read what happens next.

In case you are a fan of Gothic horror mysteries that tend to come to life before your very eyes, The Evil Guest will not disappoint you. Even if you aren’t you may find Le Fanu’s fascinating style, characters and plot developments to be quite enticing.
