One of the first werewolf novels, commended by H.P Lovecraft. The only one bizarre story from a writer of mostly crime stories. Two odd vanishings happened on a road in Sussex. The second enmeshed a member of the gentry and a renowned actress, so a wide, but an unsuccessful probe is had by Scotland Yard. An American, seeing an old pal, who is of the neighboring class, doubts something atrocious and starts to probe to confirm his suspicions.

Edwin Gerald Jones Biss was a British traveling journalist and crime author. His fictions were regularly serialized in journals and newspapers.

Gerald was born in Cambridge, England. His mother was Janet Jones from Otago, New Zealand and his father was doctor Cecil Yates Biss. He studied at University College, Leys and Trinity Hall Cambridge. It was encouraged that he took up a profession as a lawyer, but he had prestige in drafting short fictions and was denoting himself as an “author”. His writing later often appeared in newspapers in different places of the country with serialized stories including The Imposter; Bob Pharazin’s Madness; The White Rose; Who Killed Montagu Jerningham and then The Shadow of the Scaffold. The Dupe was later printed and The Fated Five – The Tale of a Great Tontine. This was ensued by Branded, a tale that was created into a motion picture featuring Josephine Earle. The House of Terror was also printed and the Undying Dread also serialized. The Door of the Unreal was a werewolf tale and a variation of kind for Gerald. His serializations were also consorted to other states including the United States and Australia.

He also wrote on the subject matter of motoring. His book appeared in The Times, Evening Standard, Evening News, Observer, Daily Mail, Sketch and Vanity Fair. He later printed a book known as Motoring Dicta, a collection of his newspaper articles.
