Description

Beginning with Anne of Green Gables, the well-known series of books written by L.M. Montgomery about the life of Anne Shirley – a fictional character inspired by Montgomery’s own family – are pieces of a puzzle that put together a delightful story about a young girl who became an orphan during infancy, as her parents died of typhoid fever. From then on, her life became a struggle, as she was treated more or less as a servant by the family that took her in. Fortunately, her joyful take on life transformed the hearts of those around her, making her life much easier.

Anne of Avonlea is the second book in the series, presenting Anne as a teenager, from age 16 to 18. This story revolves around Anne’s stay at the Avonlea School as a teacher. Anne now has to face brand new challenges. Aside from having to adopt Davy and Dora – a pair of twins whose mother died – and needing to continue her own studies, Anne finds herself facing problems such as her troublesome neighbor, Miss Harrison, and Anne’s own difficulties in her attempt to go to college.

The story is well-written and extremely rich in colorful, diverse characters. Montgomery is able to build an entire world around Anne’s inquisitive and intelligent awareness, including all the problems that a young lady of her age would normally have to deal with, and more on the side.

Despite her challenges, Anne manages to attract the sympathy of friends and loved ones, such as Paul Irving, an American boy who delights Anne with his imagination and carefree nature, and later, Miss Lavendar Lewis, a lonely, 40 year-old woman who had previously been engaged to Paul’s father.

The clean intricate style, beautiful descriptions and exceptional depth associated with the book’s characters make Anne of Avonlea a worthy choice for a truly fulfilling reading experience.
