Symphony in Yellow

Description

Symphony in Yellow is a typical Oscar Wilde poem – a beautiful, lyrical piece in which no action disturbs the atmosphere, a descriptive poem that allows the reader to feel, rather than to know.

This short poem is a perfect example of artistic creation for the sake of the artistic experience – art for art’s sake, invented and propagated by Oscar Wilde. Symphony in Yellow is not one of Wilde’s earliest works – written and first published in 1899, it is already a piece by a mature poet, with well-defined aesthetic standards. The three short, four-versed stanzas create a beautiful depiction of the city wrapped in the colors of fall – the almost still-life of the yellow leaves and the pale green river is animated only by the omnibus passing slowly and a few passers-by, but other than that, the imagery is one of quiet and undisturbed fall, despite the title that implies the presence of sounds organized into music. However, music is definitely involved here: it comes from the rhythm of the words used, the images and the atmosphere presented, alternating melancholy and contentment, all wrapped in yellow and all comforting.

Wilde’s poetry is an extraordinary expression of his aesthetic views, but the literary contributions that brought him long-lasting fame were mostly narrative works and comedies. Wilde wrote numerous beautiful fairy tales and one novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, which gained him gigantic fame. Moreover, his plays were on the repertoire of the most important theaters in London and in Europe as well, in Wilde’s own time just as much as they are today. His ideals of beauty and art were inspired by classic Greek literature, as well as by theoreticians and critics of his own time, such as Walter Pater and John Ruskin.
