Description

Errico Malatesta (1853 – 1932) was one of the more well-known anarchists operating in Italy, as well as on the European scene, around the mid to late 1800s. Since his early youth, Malatesta was involved in rallies and demonstrations, and even at the age of 14 he was apprehended for sending a letter which was considered “insolent” to king Victor Emanuel III.

Expelled from university and later even imprisoned for taking part in a minor revolutionary insurrection together with several other anarchists, Malatesta was eventually exiled from Italy. As he was denied entrance to several countries, including Syria and Turkey, he eventually found his way through France, to Geneva, one of the most famous meeting places for anarchist leaders and thinkers in Europe. It is here that his true career began, as he met and befriended other famous anarchist idealists such as Élisée Reclus and Peter Kropotkin.

Errico Malatesta wrote Anarchy in 1891 as a detailed description of the term itself and the real meaning behind it. According to the author, anarchy was misunderstood for many centuries as a misguided form of rebellion against authority, however, its true meaning and purpose is much more subtle and elegant. Malatesta introduces us to the historical connotations associated with anarchy, and presents valid points in favor of an idealized existence without the need to adhere to any governing body.

He describe show services would not have to be regulated in this type of establishment, and how both service providers and the people who would be receiving the benefits of said services could thrive through that level of freedom. Also, he emphasize show anarchy would be a solution to problems such as political corruption, greed and all the other issues associated with the few – governments, kings or ministers – controlling the many.
