Description

One of the first great poems, An Essay on Criticism, was written by the English author, Alexander Pope. The well-known quotations “To err is human, to forgive divine” and “A little learning is a dang’rous thing” came from this poem. It was written in 1709 and first appeared after two years. Most of the poem’s themes had existed in prose form. The poem is a verse essay pointing out mainly with how writers and critics behave in the new literary dealings of Pope’s modern age.

Alexander Pope was a British poet in the 18th century. He is notable for his paradoxical verse, also for his translation of Homer. He is renowned for his use of the heroic couplet, he is considered as the second most frequently quoted writer in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations next to William Shakespeare. He is also best known for his works such as this one, Essay on Criticism, The Rape of the Lock and The Dunciad.

Alexander Pope was born in London, England to Alexander Pope Senior and his wife Edith Turner Pope. Both of his parents had Catholic faith. Alexander Pope Senior, his father, was a linen merchant of Plough Court, Lombard Street, London. His mother’s sister, Christiana was the wife of Samuel Cooper, the well-known miniature painter. Pope was taught by his aunt and went to Twyford School since the enactment of the Test Acts, prohibiting Catholics from teaching, attending a university, voting, or holding a public office. Nonetheless, he attended two Catholic schools in London which were unlawful but were allowable in some places.

Pope was inspired by the classical works of historical writers like the satirists Horace and Juvenal, the epic poets Homer and Virgil, English writers like Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare and John Dryden. He also learned different languages and read texts from English, French, Italian, Latin, and Greek poets.
