Description

Known as an American author of children’s books containing charming animal and nature stories written for kids over 5 years old, Clara D. Pierson was a kindergarten teacher who lived between 1868-1952.”Among the Farmyard People” is a collection of 18 entertaining and educational tales that introduce children to farm animals. Although the animals possess the ability to speak, they are presented scientifically accurate and the stories are overall very realistic. The author uses an advanced vocabulary but perfectly adequate for her young readers; no worries about the need of rewording, redirecting or glossing over. The book begins with a preamble to the children in which the author explains that animals are feeling beings and even if they do not look like humans, they are not so different after all. This is a great way to start, as nurturing children’s love for animals and gentle behavior towards them is extremely important from many points of views. Pierson explains with simple words that animals should not be valued for what they can provide (food, wool etc.) or for the way they serve humans as companions and working force; children are taught to value animals simply because they are living creatures that have the same basic needs as we do. In other words, the author pleads for understanding the intrinsic value of an animal. As the book progresses, we discover the extraordinary stories of the lamb with the longest tail, the fussy queen bee, the foolish little mouse, the lonely little pig, the bragging peacock, running-away sheep, the twin lambs, the kitten who lost herself, the discontented guinea hen, the young rat facing the trap and many more creatures – each with its own charming story. All the tales close with a gentle moral that encourages children to behave better. The moral is not preachy, but subtle and truly meaningful.
