Description

A Little Princess written by Frances Hodgson Burnett tells the story of a young girl named Sarah Crewe, with a kind hearted and good nature, who overcomes a series of difficulties her previous lifestyle had not prepared her for.

In the beginning of the novel, the seven years old protagonist arrives with her father, Captain Crew, at a London boarding school for young girls, lead by the greedy and false Miss Minchin. When she finds out that Sarah’s father possesses an impressive fortune, she offers the little girl a privileged statute inside the institution.

The careless life the heroine lives ends suddenly four years later, when the news of Captain Crewe dying in poverty arrives to London. The headmistress shows her true face, as she seizes all Sarah’s possessions and forces her to move into the attic and to work as a servant at the boarding school to gain her daily bread.

In spite of the hard life she lives now, the protagonist succeeds in keeping her spirits high, helping those who are even less lucky than she is. Thanks to her open, optimistic attitude, she keeps the friends she made in her good years at school close and she also makes new ones in people who are impressed by the kindness of her soul. Although she never expects a reward for her good deeds, this appears sooner than everyone thinks.

Francess Hodgson Burnett was born in the city of Manchester from the Lancashire County in England, on November 24th, 1849. She produced many writings, but the children’s books she wrote made her famous, as she is regarded as one of the most beloved authors of the genre.

She died in 1924, in New York, and she is buried in Roslyn Cemetery. Secret Garden, Little Lord Fauntleroy, That Lass o’ Lowrie’s, Queen Silver-Bell and The Lost Prince are just some of her works that are still hugely popular.
