Description

The Epitome is a short and precise allocution of the Formula’s 12 articles; the Solid Declaration of an informative demonstration. Appropriate rule is given in the theses; precluded rule in the antitheses. As the initial manuscript was scribed in German, a Latin conversion was primed for the Latin edition of the Book of Concord issued in 1584.

The declaration and subscription of this edition was a chief component in the amalgamation and conservancy of Lutheranism. It was brought about at the order of the Elector August of Saxony, and it was the communal effort of a group of Lutheran theologians and churchmen of the last 16th century. They encountered from April 9 to June 7, 1576 in Torgau, the seat of government for the Electorate of Saxony during those times.

Jakob Andreae was a distinguished German Lutheran theologian, participated in the writings of important articles.

He was born in Waiblingen, in the Duchy of Württemberg. He attended the University of Tübingen from 1541. He went to the diets of Regensburg and Augsburg, became an instructor of theology in the University of Tübingen, and the church leader of St. George. He was an active member in Protestant deliberations and associations, especially in the implementation of a common declaration of commitment between the two parties.

In 1573, he organized with the aid of Martin Crusiusa, a conformity with Patriarch Jeremias II of Constantinople, to make connexion in part of the Lutheran Church with the Orthodox Church.

He was a party of the 1577 Formula of Concord, and editor with Martin Chemnitz of the 1580 Book of Concord. In his later years, he went to Bohemia and Germany, effecting for the solidification of the Reformation, conversing with pastors, magistrates, and princes. He was the writer of over 150 writings, almost all controversial and exuberantly created, for the much part pointed in contrary to Calvinism.
