Joseph Jacobs was an Australian folklorist, literary critic, social scientist, historian and an English literature author who was a noteworthy compiler and publisher of English traditional stories. His publications continued to make popular many of the world’s renowned adaptations of English fairy stories such as “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Goldilocks and the three bears”, “The Three Little Pigs”, “Jack the Giant Killer” and “The History of Tom Thumb”. He printed his English fairy tale collections: English Fairy Tales in 1890 and More English Fairytales in 1893 but also continued after and in amidst both volumes to print fairy stories gathered from continental Europe along with Jewish, Celtic and Indian traditional stories which made him among the best known authors of magical fiction for the English language. Joseph was also an editor for journals and texts on the topic of legends which contained editing the Fables of Bidpai and the Fables of Aesop, and essays on the immigration of Jewish mythology. He also edited editions of The Thousand and One Nights. He continued to be associated with The Folklore Society in England and came to be an editor of the society journal Folklore. Joseph Jacobs also wrote to The Jewish Encyclopedia.
