Description

Written at the turn of the 20th century, Eleanor Hallowell Abbott’s White Linen Nurse is a lighthearted, hilarious romance novel that you will easily fall in love with. Although the period it was written in influences both the characters and the storyline in that it involves social expectations and mores that have since been discarded, the authentic feel of what it was like to act as a nurse in the 1910s adds even more value to this exceptional novel.

While the beginning of The White Linen Nurse is somewhat slow, with what appears to be stereotypical uninteresting characters dominating the scene, you’ll soon find yourself dazzled and surprised by the unexpected plot twists and intriguing developments that Abbott’s story holds.

The plot is about a nurse who grows to dislike her profession so much that each and every day spent doing her chores and duties becomes a difficult test. Despite her efficiency and the skill she obtained upon graduating as a fully-fledged nurse, she feels a definite lack of freedom, energy and individuality, translated through her constant complaining. When, however, she is tasked with taking care of the senior surgeon’s irritable invalid daughter, everything changes, and our heroine finds herself in the midst of an interesting romance made even more enjoyable by all the finny insights and unexpectedly humorous situations that the reader is presented with.

This story is undoubtedly one of Eleanor Hallowell Abbott’s authentic gems, and the situational humor, as well as the characters themselves will draw remembrance of stories like John Webster’s Daddy Longlegs written in roughly the same period.
