Description
The book chronicles the story of young Mary, child of wealthy British parents living in India. After the parents succumb to a cholera outbreak, Mary is sent to live in England with her uncle, Archibald Craven, an aloof man haunted by memories of his deceased wife, Lilias. Mary is incredibly lonely in the large Craven household, though she befriends a chambermaid, Martha, who tells tales of a hidden garden, once tended by the late Mrs. Archibald Craven. Mary finds the hidden key and the entrance to the secret garden. She also befriends Mary’s brother, Dickon, who is a resourceful gardener. Mary and Dickon work together to bring the abandoned garden back to life. Meanwhile, Mary hears strange noises coming from within the large house. The many servants are evasive about the noises, blaming them on the wind or giving other vague explanations. Mary sets off to find the source of the sounds and finds a bedridden boy, the ill-tempered son of her uncle, Colin. Colin is kept away from his father because of his close resemblance to his mother, whose memory haunts Archibald. Archibald also believes his son will develop a severe disability, as he himself is mildly hunchbacked. Though nothing is actual wrong with Colin, years of bed rest have transformed him into a belligerent invalid prone to terrible fits. Mary stubbornly insists on befriending Colin, and begins to help him realize beautiful world that he is missing. While Archibald is away, Colin, Dickon, and Mary begin a glorious transformation of the secret garden. However, everyone fears what Archibald will say and do when he finds out.
