Description

Ballou’s novel is a fascinating and adventurous seafaring story that features a gracefully beautiful and very resilient ship, its brave crew, a number of other characters rescued from a ship that proved to be much less resilient and was wrecked by a storm and a few evil characters as well.

The adventures take place around the coasts of Africa in a period when slave trade on and from the continent was at its height. The story bears the subtitle The African Quadroon: A Story of the Slave Coast and is loosely based on the author’s own experiences at sea – he worked as a deputy navy-agent for a long time and he took part in a long journey that took him around the Globe, learning everything he could about ships and the current state of affairs when slave trade was concerned.

The story features two brothers who go their own separate ways after their father’s business fails. One of them, good and noble, becomes a sea captain on a ship that transports slaves from Africa, the other, cruel and evil, also becomes a navy officer, but he pursues a different career. It is the good brother who becomes the captain of the Sea-Witch, goes through lots of adventures and finally gets arrested by none else but his evil and vengeful brother as the result of the reports made by woman maddened by love. However, the story is an old-fashioned naval romance, so it will all end well, eventually.

Ballou was not only an experienced seaman, but also an excellent storyteller – he mixes romance, mystery, betrayal and intrigue into the plot of The Sea-Witch so masterfully that the reader will find the book difficult to put down until the end. Though eventful and intriguing, The Sea-Witch is a lightweight book, perfect for readers who enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean and are looking for an engaging and romantic adventure story.
