Follow A Great Mystery A-La Sherlock Holmes From The Creator Of Winnie The Pooh

Anyone who has heard of Alan Alexander Milne will know that he is the creator of the teddy bear character, Winnie the Pooh. However, many would not have guessed that Milne was also a fan of detective stories and that he also wrote The Red House Mystery – his only detective book in his entire career. This classic is a locked room whodunnit in which the protagonist of the story is an amateur detective.

The action takes place in an English country house setting, where Mark Ablett, the host, entertains a house party. Later on, Robert, the long lost brother and black sheep of the family appears only to be found dead shortly thereafter. Soon after his death, the host disappears as well, but fortunately a stranger comes by. The stranger is Tony Gilligham – he came to the home to call on his friend, Bill. Gilligham will go on to investigate the murder as well as the mysterious disappearance of the host, while playing Sherlock Holmes alongside his Watson-like sidekick, Bill.

This novel is unique due to the fact that the protagonist is not an experienced detective but a witty man keen on solving the mystery. Milne himself claimed that he did not want another detective story where the detectives or the criminals are professionals, so that he made them both “normal” people.

In The Red House Mystery, the amateur duo investigate using unscientific methods and while having no skills or training in the art of the detective whatsoever. At the same time, the villain is no professional either, and fingerprints are of no importance to him – and neither to the investigators.

The Red House Mystery will certainly excite and amuse the readers, especially thanks to Bill’s dull way of playing the Watson sidekick and his talent to spell out the obvious.
