Description
Oscar Wilde, best known for his comic genius displayed in plays such as The Importance of Being Earnest, wrote just once novel: the Faustian tale entitled The Picture of Dorian Gray. Though it reads almost like a gothic novel, the story is a tongueincheek commentary on England’s culture and customs. The story revolves around young, handsome Dorian Gray, who is set to have his portrait drawn by the renowned artist, Basil Hallward. During one of their sittings, Hallward introduces Gray to the hedonistic Lord Henry, who admires the portrait. Lord Henry makes a speech about the fleeting nature of youth, and Dorian becomes worried that as he ages, the portrait will be a visual reminder of what he once had: impeccable good looks. Dorian curses the painting and pledges to sell his soul in exchange for the supernatural ability to remain…ageless. He decrees the painting shall bear the burden of the years while he remains youthful forever. Under Lord Henry’s corruptible influence, Dorian begins to live a life full of greed and selfabsorption. As he remains as handsome as the day he cursed his portrait, the painting not only ages, but becomes a hideous representation of his inner self. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a commentary not only on the superficial nature of English culture, but on how we perceive and how we ought to perceive art. Written to be controversial, The Picture of Dorian Gray is still a riveting and witty read.
