An fragmentary English epic poem, The Faerie Queene, was written by Edmund Spenser. Books 1, 2, and 3 were first published, then republished with books 4, 5, and 6. Mutabilitie Cantos or book 7, cantos 6 to 8, is the only existing fragment of the Faerie Queene. Although the book was unfinished, it is considered as one of the most exemplary and substantial literary ever made up to the present. Spenser was inspired and made a tribute to Queen Elizabeth, and to the golden age. His book prevails one of the most valued literary success during the period of Queen Elizabeth.

Book 6 focuses on the virtue of Courtesy as personified by Sir Calidore. The Faerie Queene was written during the Reformation, a religious and political dispute. During her reign, Queen Elizabeth altered the official religion of the country to Protestantism. The book was about the oppression of the Protestants and how Catholic canon was not fair.

The Faerie Queene was made with full of connotations to events, issues, and distinct persons in England and Ireland, involving Mary, Queen of Scots, the Spanish Armada, the English Reformation, and even Queen Elizabeth herself. Both the Faerie Queene and Belphoebe personify Queen Elizabeth, with exceptional flattery.

Although the Queen was fairly spoken, The Faerie Queene doubts the Queen’s ability to rule efficiently because she was a woman, and connotes the flaws of her reign. A character named Britomart who refers that the Queen’s destiny is to be an immortal womb because Elizabeth is unmarried and the nation is concerned of who will reign after her if she has no children.

Mutabilitie Cantos or Book 7 of The Faerie Queene has the key character, the aggressive, Titaness Mutabilitie who wishes to continue her rule to the heavens after a devastating chaos in the world, overthrowing the laws of nature, justice and policy. She said that all things may perish, but their spirits may not.
