The protagonist, Peter Vibart, an Oxford alumnus with no employment but for 10 guineas he has bequeathed, moves off on a trek to the Kent countryside. On his way, he encounters several attractive and affectionate personalities along with some lazybones, encounters with many catastrophes and victories, and finally he runs into The Woman, who takes him to all the more catastrophes and victories.

John Jeffery Farnol was born in Aston, Birmingham, England, UK, his parents were Kate Jeffery and Henry John Farnol, an employee of a factory and a founder of brass. He had two brothers and a sister. He grew up in London and Kent. He studied at the Westminster School of Art after leaving his employment in a Birmingham metal-working company.

Then, he tied the knot with Blanche Wilhelmina Victoria Hawley, who was 16 years old when they got married. She was the daughter of the prominent New York scenic artist H. Hughson Hawley; they emigrated to the USA, where he was hired as a scene artist. They had a daughter, Gillian Hawley. He moved back to England in 1910, and lived at Eastbourne, Sussex. He later divorced Blanche, and wedded Phyllis Mary Clarke, and adopted her daughter, Charmian Jane. His nephew was Ewart Oakeshott, the British artist, collector and amateur historian, who authored on primeval arms and armor.

He wrote his first love story My Lady Caprice in 1907. The fame of his first stories made John to be a talented novelist. He wrote about 40 novels and volumes of tales, and a few non-fiction and stories for children. His final work was fulfilled by his second wife Phyllis.

Two of his first novels, The Amateur Gentleman and The Broad Highway, have been released in a rendition edited by romance writer Barbara Cartland. The Amateur Gentleman was made into a movie adaptation for Britain in 1920 and 1936 and for America in 1926.
