Thornton W. Burgess was a prominent conservationist as well as popular children’s books author. During the course of his 50 year long career, he managed to write more than 170 books and over 15,000 stories. He was thus named the Bedtime Story-Man. In his books, he tries to show children the beauty of nature and wildlife as well as teach them valuable lessons in life. The Adventures of Johnny Chuck is a book in the series of children’s stories, along with the adventures of other lovable characters such as Jimmy Skunk, Reddy Fox and Peter Rabbit. The story focuses this time on Johnny Chuck – a woodchuck that is becoming distressed with his boring life in his burrow in the Green Forest. With spring having arrived in the Green Meadows, he cannot resist the urge anymore and he leaves his house to his trusted friend Jimmy Skunk and starts off on his own adventure. During his journey, he encounters a quite strange woodchuck, and following an argument, the two get into a brawl after which Johnny comes out as the winner. He starts to be proud and feels unconquerable, until he meets Polly Chuck that is. No other woodchuck could conquer his body, but Polly managed to steal his heart. The two find a great place in an orchard and build a new burrow that they fend off from intruders wishing to steal their new home. The Adventures of Johnny Chuck contains the same delightful stories about animals. The author based many of their actions on actual animal behavior. He masterfully blended biology and animal behavior with his great storytelling skills in order to raise the interests of the young minds towards nature as well as the importance of preserving it the way it is.
