Description
The Adventures of Danny Meadow Mouse is one of the most eventful fables by Thornton W. Burgess. Revolving around the tiny animal, the plot is full of dangerous adventures and narrow escapes, each of which teach Danny – and with him, his readers – a lesson. The book starts with Danny complaining about the length of his tail – he finds it too short for his plump body. Then, he sets off and gets into all sorts of troubles. He is stalked by Granny Fox, then he gets caught by Hooty the Owl, and then his adventures continue in the peach orchard on Farmer Brown’s farm. He eventually gets trapped in a tin box, but he escapes form that one, too, thanks to his wit and his friends, only to be pursued by a fox again. He has lots of friends in the Green Forest and outside of it as well – Tommy Tit, Old Mr. Toad, Peter Rabbit, Striped Chipmunk and Johnny Chuck like Danny are all there to help him out on numerous occasions, saving his life whenever he gets into trouble. One of the things that make this book so great is that the short stories in it have something to say to any kid. Young kids of the pre-reader age can enjoy the quality time when their parents read the stories for them and they can keep their fingers crossed for the cute little mouse, while older children can read the stories for themselves and talk about them with their parents, finding similarities between the animal world depicted by Burgess and the world of humans. Burgess tells the stories using great style and a vocabulary that is easy to understand for the children, but he also uses words that seem a bit archaic for today’s readers, providing an excellent opportunity for kids to extend their vocabulary.
