J.S. Fletcher is not your usual author of mystery novels. His complex, dramatic and original plots have brought him quite a reputation in his day, and stories such as Scarhaven Keep remain as a testament to his outstanding ability to blend the most unlikely of people and circumstances together, in order to create a truly harmonious and engaging plot line. The action begins with the disappearance of a famous actor in Northern England. Many of the most important characters of the novel are, in fact, actors; however, there are a few additional characters that prove to not only present themselves through mysterious, thought-provoking personalities, but also play a pivotal role in the evolution of the story. Like pawns in a chess game, Fletcher masterfully directs his characters to build up the suspense and give rise to a mystery that you may not easily be able to solve. The hero of the story, a young playwright, is a dashing and independent man who also has some romance in his future – a young girl living in poverty in Scarhaven cottage. The story is quite intriguing in its depiction of traveling acting troupes and their thrilling tales, as well as the descriptions that Fletcher so elaborately presents to his readers. He manages to enchant through his well-chosen words, while keeping track of many side elements and behind the scenes stories designed to attract (or, in some cases, distract) the reader’s attention, while enriching the story even more. In the course of the detective story, there are a number of mysterious happenings to be solved, including a murder, and Fletcher’s intriguing, characters fascinate through their complexity. You’ll find that reading this novel will be an experience like no other; impostors, mysterious young ladies and unpleasant gentlemen making it all the more realistic and even addictive at times.
