Description
Written as part of a series of travel books, all featuring exotic destinations, Peeps at Many Lands: Egypt by R. Talbot Kelly brings the wonderful world of Egypt closer to the reader, with the help of interesting and inspiring depictions of the land, Cairo, the Nile and the monuments that make the country so famous. This fascinating travelogue is much more than a Baedeker to the African country – it is an account of the people who live there, of their culture reaching back thousands of years, of the technologies they use to irrigate the land and to make the desert fertile.R. Talbot Kelly is an expert in Egypt – as a matter of fact he was so fascinated by the land that he decided to move there in 1883. He spent over three decades in the country, practicing his initial vocation, landscape and genre painting from a studio in Cairo. He was fluent in Arabic, which allowed him to travel on his own and to have first-hand experiences of Egyptian life in the villages just as much as in the city of Cairo. He spent quite a long time among Bedouin tribes in the desert, so his account of the life of these fascinating nomads is also based on the author’s own experiences. The Peeps at many Lands series includes travelogues about Australia, Belgium, Norway, Morocco, Burma, Ireland, Spain and Japan, but not all of them were written by Kelly. Beside the book about Egypt, Kelly wrote the travelogue about Burma for the series, so if you like this book, you will certainly like the one about Burma as well. The other pieces in the series were written by other keen travelers, such as James Baikie, J. Herbert Cranston, George W. T. Omond, to mention just a few, and they all provide wonderful insight into the life of the countries depicted.
