Description
Great Expectations is generally thought of as a perfectly constructed novel; wonderful, fully realized characters, a compelling plot, and surprising twists make it a favorite Dickens novel for many. The novel is thought to be an autobiographical reflection of Dickens’ own life.
The story follows an orphan named Pip. Pip is raised by his cruel older sister, Mrs. Joe. Mrs. Joe’s husband, Joe Gargery, is much more caring toward Pip. Together, they try and avoid Mrs. Joe’s regular beatings. The story begins on the eve of Christmas in 1812 (not coincidentally, the same day of Dickens’ birth) when young Pip, just 7 years old, happens across an escaped convict in the local church graveyard. The convict threatens him and demands food and a file to get out of his shackles. Terrified, Pip steals food from his sister and helps the convict escape. He is plagued with a guilty conscious.
The novel follows Pip as he grows up and encounters remarkable people like the brokenhearted Miss Havisham, a rich eccentric who suffers from a broken heart, and her adopted child, the beautiful Estella, who Pip obsesses over. When Pip received a large sum of money from a mysterious benefactor, he goes on a quest to become a true English gentleman. In his desire to impress Estella and leave his common ways behind him, Pip begins to feel embarrassed by those who love him. In true Dickens fashion, the novel is contains a hefty dose of realistic tragedy combined with his trademark humor and sympathetic characters. Pip’s growth from boy to gentleman is a journey worth listening to.
