Mary Pengilly was brought to a Lunatic Asylum by her children where she had a diary, which this narrative is derived from. Mary documents the critical situations and misconducts gotten at the so-called care from the nurses while she was there. Soon after Mary is unconfined she carries it on herself to let the government officials known of the condition at the Provincial Lunatic Asylum. She got married at Queensbury County of York on the 16th instant by the Rev. D. McCurdy, Mr. Robert Pengilly of St. John to Miss Mary Huestis daughter of Lewis Heustis Esq of the previous location. Mary Huestis and Robert Pengilly had 6 children, 5 sons and 1 daughter. Their house in Saint John was devastated in the Great Fire. Mary Huestis Pengilly stayed in Massachusetts. She was thereafter brought to the Provincial Lunatic Asylum in Saint John. Her Diary Written in the Provincial Lunatic Asylum, which was released on her own, signifies to the designation as Alderman of her son, Thomas M. Pengilly, and to his brother Lewis traveling “800 miles beyond Winnipeg surveying.” For Valentine’s Day, the Saint John Globe released a count of 225 bachelor men, which involved one Thomas Pengilly, “the most silent member of the Common Council board.” A Dubuque, Iowa notice of the 3rd says: Mrs. Mary Huestis Pengilly passed away at Mercy Hospital and her dead body will be brought to Boston on acknowledgement of directives from her son, a dispensing chemist there. She exited the psychiatric ward, Saint John, N.B. 9 years before and soon made a trip in the country marketing some verses which she told the heavenly beings had enthused, and her diary scrutinizing the running of the St. John asylum. She arrived there two weeks before and was diagnosed mentally unfit, although being ill was taken to the hospital.
