Description
Young Davy reads the book of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and sleeps through it. When all of a sudden, a goblin comes out in the scorching fire and brings Davy in a “believing voyage”. The action and adventure story is similar with the adventures of Alice in Wonderland, where Davy, at the age of 8, befriends with a lot of odd characters brought about by his magical dream. Davy and the Goblin contains these delightful chapters: How the Goblin came; The Beginning of the Believing Voyage; In the Sugar-Plum Garden; The Butterscotchmen; Jack and the Bean-stalk’s Farm; The Giant Badorful; The Moving Forest; Sindbad the Sailor’s House; Lay-overs for Meddlers; Ribsy; Robinson Crusoe’s Island; A Whale in a Waistcoat; The Talking Waves and the Old Sea-dog; and The End of the Believing Voyage. Charles Edward Carryl was born in New York to parents Nathan Taylor Carryl and Mary Wetmore Carryl. He worked at railroad companies, became a stockbroker and in his later life, he wrote children’s literature. He was also known for his works on The Stock Exchange Primer, Sears and Cole (New York, NY); Davy and The Goblin; or, What Followed Reading “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,”; The Admiral’s Caravan; The River Syndicate and Other Stories; Charades by an Idle Man; A Capital Ship; or The Walloping Window-Blind; and The Walloping Window-Blind. Charles E. Carryl is renowned for his amiable inane children’s stories, which are similar in style with how the acclaimed British author, Lewis Carroll created his fantastical adventures. Charles Edward wrote his stories for his own children, where one of child became a writer too. Children in the United States were enchanted when he released his books. Although his stories are long forgotten by children of today, he remains to be the Lewis Carroll of America in the late 19th Century.
