Robert Sidney Bowen, Jr. was a WWI aeronaut, newspaper journalist, magazine editor and writer who was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He is known mostly for his boys’ serial books authored through WWII, the Dave Dawson War Adventure Series and the Red Randall Series. He also wrote using the name R. Sidney Bowen and by making use of the pen name James Robert Richard.

Robert focused himself into writing books by utilizing his success as editor-in-chief of Aviation Magazine to compose Flying From The Ground Up, a non-fiction work on how to take flight an airplane. He started working casually for pulp magazines. Then, he began his own pulp magazine, Dusty Ayres And His Battle Birds, for Popular Publications. 12 copies were issued, the first eleven issued monthly from July 1934 through July 1935, with more copies issued monthly. Robert remained to write mystery, adventure, sports, and aviation pulp magazines in his later life.
