Oscar Douglas Skelton was a political economist and civil servant. Oscar was born in Orangeville, Ontario, Canada. He continued his studies to earn a scholarship to Queen’s University and enrolled classics. He then obtained a Master of Arts degree and audited classes of Adam Shortt, a political scientist. He was employed in Philadelphia for The Booklover’s Magazine and tied the knot with Isabel Murphy. He also went on to study political economy at University of Chicago and pursued the lessons of Thorstein Veblen, whom he adored for his “stock of science and of philosophy & of first hand knowledge of business affairs.”

Oscar remained good friends with Adam at his alma mater and had an opportunity to work there. Oscar acquired his doctorate in political economy from the University of Chicago. He was called for work to the John A. Macdonald Professorship of Political Science and Economics at Queen’s University, with which he held for almost two decades. He also became the university’s Dean of Arts and as the chairman of their board of trustees.

He was the writer of 2 works in the Chronicles of Canada series: The Day of Sir Wilfrid Laurier: A Chronicle of Our Own Times published in 1916 and The Railway Builders: A Chronicle of Overland Highways published in 1920.
