Caesar and Cleopatra is a drama that portrays a novelized story of the romantic affair of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra. It was first printed with Captain Brassbound’s Conversion and The Devil’s Disciple in Shaw’s 1901 compilation Three Plays for Puritans. It was first shown in a one theatrical reading at Newcastle upon Tyne on 15 March 1899, to get hold of the exclusive rights. The drama was created in New York in 1906 and in London at the Savoy Theatre in 1907.

George Bernard Shaw, recognized at his persistence commonly as Bernard Shaw, was an Irish dramatist who had both British and Irish citizenship, critic and polemicist whose sway on Western theatre, culture and politics prolonged from the 1880s to his death and thereafter. He had over 60 dramas, consisting of most important works including Man and Superman, Pygmalion and Saint Joan. With a variety integrating both contemporary humor and historic metaphor, Shaw was the primary playwright of his time. He was the first one to be awarded both a Nobel Prize and an Academy Award, being given the 1925 Nobel Prize in Literature and sharing the 1938 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the motion picture version of Pygmalion.

He was born in Dublin, then emigrated to London where he made himself well-known as a writer and novelist. In the middle of 1880s he was a valued theatre and music critic. Ensuing a political awareness, he associated himself with the gradualist Fabian Society and became its mostly known pamphleteer. He had been making dramas for years before his first public prestige, 1894’s Arms and the Man. Inspired by Henrik Ibsen, he pursued to present a new pragmatism into English-language play, using his dramas as tools to propagate his political, social and religious thoughts. In the beginning of 20th century his being a playwright was held with a series of analytical and famous feats such as Major Barbara, The Doctor’s Dilemma and Caesar and Cleopatra.
