Description

Written between April and September, 1878, but not published until a couple of years later, Ayala’s Angel by Anthony Trollope is one of the author’s liveliest and freshest pieces of work and also one that entertains and moves the reader with romantic episodes.

The novel is about two sisters, Lucy and Ayala Dormer, orphaned when still very young, very different in terms of character, but loving and caring for each other deeply. After the death of their parents, the two girls are separated and raised by relatives – Lucy goes to poorer relatives, while Ayala is taken off by one of her wealthy aunts. The angel in the title lives only in Ayala’s dreams – it is a superior being, a man more handsome than any other living men, funny and caring, loving and respectable, a dream character that blocks the girl in her pursuit of real love. Ayala meets a Colonel, a man who fits the description almost perfectly, except that he is not very handsome. She is also pursued by two other men and she eventually makes her choice, refusing the two suitors and choosing the Colonel.

Ayala’s Angel is a medium-length novel in Trollope’s standards, but quite a long one in anyone else’s, so the author has plenty of opportunity to develop the characters in the book and to include long and detailed descriptions of events and places as well – and there are lots of characters, lots of places and lots of events in the book. The eventful story is full of romantic episodes, many of which are described in a funny and humorous style.

Although Trollope is known for his gloomy plots and dark settings, Ayala’s Angel is a refreshing exception – the story’s ending is as charming and sweet as the story itself, so the novel can be recommended to young and mature readers as well.
