Description

At the Back of the North Wind is one of the most successful children’s stories from the pen of George MacDonald. First published in series from 1868 and then complied into a book form in 1871, the fantasy story is still a favorite with children and adults as well.

The protagonist of the novel is a boy called Diamond. He is a cheerful and charming little boy, the joy of the family, bringing peace wherever he goes. One night he is trying to fall asleep in his attic room, but there is a strong wind blowing outside, repeatedly removing the plug in the wall and keeping Diamond awake. He soon understands that the wind is in fact the North Wind, trying to look in through the hole, so he lets in the Wind and they become friends.

The Wind then lets the boy accompany her and they go through lots of wonderful adventures together. It turns out that the North Wind does not blow in random directions – she has assignments. Most of the tasks she must accomplish are good deeds, but on one occasion she is supposed to sink a ship. However, even this seemingly bad deed turns out to be good in the end, fulfilling God’s will.

Considered to be by many scholars and fans to be one of the author’s masterpieces, At the Back of the North Wind is more than a simple tale for children. Like so many other works by MacDonald, it touches upon important philosophical and theological questions and it also expresses MacDonald’s views of class division in a way that makes complex abstract concepts easy to understand for children. The story is eventful and exciting, presented in a great style, charming readers today just as much as it used to charm its first readers one and a half century ago.
