Description

Dog lovers will quickly be taken in by this delightful and surprisingly informative writing about dogs, their natural tendencies and their strong fondness for being, as they have been for many thousands of years, man’s best friend and most faithful companion. Anecdotes of Dogs offers far more than just a superficial portrayal of these animals. Covering each of the most notable dog breeds in order, and in great detail, it offers readers a glimpse into the intellectual capabilities and psychological character of these remarkable animals.

Edward Jesse (1780 – 1868) was an English writer who specialized mainly in natural history. His background had allowed him to pursue the art of writing unhindered. Having been born in Hutton Cranswick, Yorkshire, he was the son of the local vicar, and it didn’t take long before he was presented with the important assignment of being deputy surveyor of the royal palaces and parks.

As his interest in studying and understanding animals and nature continued to grow, Jesse managed to write several notable books on these topics, which included Anecdotes of Dogs. A few of his other titles are Gleanings in Natural History, which was his first notable work of literature, and his comprehensive Lectures on Natural History.

Although Jesse had read just about every piece written about dogs until the mid-1800s, he never truly tried to present just an overview of that information. Instead, through his own extensive practical background and experience with dogs, he managed to create a detailed account of his findings of the character and sensibilities of dogs and the role of each breed as loyal companion of man.
