Description
Despite her relatively short life and career, Toru Dutt (1856 – 1877) was one of the most influential Indian poets of her time, who achieved global recognition for her remarkable works. At a young age, Dutt had already visited France and later moved to Cambridge in England to attend the Higher Lectures for Women at Cambridge University. Continuing her French studied, she mastered both French and English, most of her poems having been written in English.Regardless of the fact that her family was known as one of the few wealthy families in Bengal that have converted to Christianity, Toru Dutt had never abandoned her Hindu roots. In fact, she was fascinated with the tales, legends and ballads that have been passed down throughout the generations, reaching her ears and sparking her imagination as a young girl.A sizable collection of these poems are featured in the first part of Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hinduism. The collection begins with the story of Savitri presented in five parts, and continues with titles that include The Legend of Dhruva, Jogadhya Uma and Lakshman. The book was published by Dutt’s father after the poet’s untimely death in 1877, and like many of Dutt’s poems and works, it achieved popularity in France and England posthumously. Additionally to the longer ancient ballads and legends, the second half of the book also contains shorter poems written by Dutt herself and revealing her insight and talent, as well as mirroring the impressions that her travels through Europe had left on her. Among them are several sonnets and short poems, as well as popular titles like Our Casuarina Tree. The contrast between Europe and the Orient is shown in a unique and beautiful manner through the eyes of a young girl who was extremely knowledgeable and talented compared to many of the women of her era, regardless of their background.
