Charles Bradlaugh (1833 – 1891) was one of the leading atheist English political activists of his time. A well-known and well-read freethinker himself, Bradlaugh had no issue in openly discussing his political beliefs and atheist views, often shocking and angering his peers in the process. The author also had an extensive background in journalism, and his most remarkable accomplishment was to become the founder of the National Secular Society in 1866, promoting secularism and the separation between church and state.Bradlaugh’s Ancient and Modern Celebrated Freethinkers is a book containing a comprehensive set of biographical presentations on 23 of the most notable freethinkers in history. It was published in 1877, and came at the height of Bradlaugh’s popularity as an author, the then already well-known political figure having already written several notable publications about religion and atheism, including “Who Was Jesus Christ, and What Did He Teach?” in 1860, A Plea for Atheism in 1864 and The Free-Thinker’s Textbook in 1876.Modern readers, whether they be historians, religious idealists, atheists, philosophers, or anyone interested in the topics or fields of expertise associated with religion, spirituality and history, will be completely drawn in and immersed into this rather short but expansive work. 134 pages long, the book introduces us to freethinkers the likes of Descartes, Spinoza, Voltaire and Charles Blount, each of them having upset important figures of authority or otherwise caused problems to those in authority by speaking up and expressing their beliefs. Some of the intelligent philosophers and thinkers on Bradlaugh’s list even paid with their lives because of their ideals, and Bradlaugh himself sought to send a powerful message through the book in order to inspire all those who felt afraid to express their true views.
