Description

Inspired partly by events from the life of Joseph Conrad (1857 – 1924) himself, as well as believed to be based on his own life as a foreigner living in a foreign land, Amy Foster is the story of a young Central European mountaineer shipwrecked off the coast of England on a journey from his native country to America.

Forced to live as a vagabond by the locals who believed he was nothing more, and did not understand his strange language, “Yanko Goorall” is unable to even tell anyone of his origins. However, his luck soon improved as he met an eccentric old man by the name of Mr. Swaffer. The title of this gem of a short story written by Joseph Conrad is the name of a woman who would play a key role in Goorall’s life later on – Amy Foster, his wife.

The story focuses heavily on the reception that the culturally and socially isolated man had to cope with while literally marooned on English soil. In the story, Conrad draws upon his own experiences, including an event that disturbed his wife terribly during their honeymoon, when Conrad fell ill and reverted to his native Polish language before his fever lessened.

Amy Foster is a story written through Conrad’s distinctive, influential and highly symbolic style, with detailed imagery and events that can easily be interpreted in multiple ways. Cultural background and dynamics play a key role in Conrad’s short story, and his characters seem to come alive through their authenticity in a manner that displays both their best and worst traits without any attempted censorship.

Conrad’s style, his novels and short stories inspired countless accomplished authors like Hemingway, Greene or Orwell. Throughout his writings, however, very few other works mirror the author’s cultural beliefs and ideals as well as Amy Foster.
